As Tesla owners still drool over CarPlay support, Apple itself is silently working on its own electric vehicle, with people familiar with the matter saying the project is slowly but surely gaining momentum and 2024 will likely witness of the official unveiling.
In the meantime, the rumor brings us all kinds of speculation, with one particular rumor indicating that Elon Musk wanted to sell Tesla to Apple, but CEO Tim Cook said no from the start.
A concept created by designer John Calkins envisions what CarPlay would have looked like if Cook was genuinely interested in the purchase and Apple ultimately took over Tesla.
More like a CarPlay on steroids, this envisioned version shows Apple’s car platform running on a 15-inch screen similar to that of the Tesla Model 3, obviously with a series of upgrades to dramatically improve the experience.
The interface is obviously getting a major overhaul thanks to the large screen, with CarPlay now having access to more than just infotainment and navigation functions inside the car. It can also display vehicle information and allow the driver to control certain functions with the push of a button.
The dock, which is quite limited currently on CarPlay, would display a lot more icons, turning the CarPlay interface into something reminiscent of the traditional dock on the macOS desktop.
It’s an interesting concept, there’s no question about it, but in the end, it’s something we’ll probably never see in real life, as a deal between Apple and Tesla can only happen when the pigs fly.
It remains to be seen whether or not this looks like the version Apple wants to install in its next Apple Car, but expect Cupertino’s electric vehicle to come with top-notch infotainment and powerhouse capabilities anyway. a large screen to give access to everything. would feel right at home in such a setup.
