Entering his third season as the 25th-best player in the NBA, according to ESPN, up-and-coming young star Anthony Edwards is set for a monster season. Tim Connelly, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ new president of basketball operations, is building a strong core around him for a deeper playoff run. The former No. 1 overall pick has all the tools to become one of the NBA’s premier guards/small forwards.

For many, Karl-Anthony Towns is considered the mainstay of the franchise. However, this is the season where Ant-Man surpasses him. There are three keys to elevating him to All-Star status: starting the season as the leader of the Timberwolves, taking Wolves to the top of the Western Conference, and demonstrating his growth as a shooter, defender and leader.

1. Anthony Edwards needs to start strong in the first three months

As head coach Chris Finch learns how to use the Twin Towers of Towns and new addition Rudy Gobert in the frontcourt, Edwards is expected to take the reins as leading scorer. Edwards’ anticipated growth is key to propelling the Minnesota Timberwolves from Play-In recipients to championship contenders.

His point average in the first three months of last season was 23.0, 21.7 and 22.9 points per game. During that streak, Edwards was down 48 in a loss to the Warriors.

After reviewing his draft profile, Edwards’ lineups were Dwyane Wade, Donovan Mitchell, and Zach LaVine. All three were stars, and that’s the level of play Edwards needs to achieve All-Star status. Devin Booker, whose spreads last season were 26.8/5.0/4.8, is the one Edwards needs to make sure he keeps pace with to secure an All-Star spot .

If he continues to improve and shoot like he did in his 10-triple performance, his entry into the All-Star contest will be automatic.
