The last time Angelina Jolie graced the big screen, she played the mighty Thena in the 2021 marvel movie Eternals. Next his first time in the realm of superheroesthe iconic and Oscar-winning actress will star in a drama titled Marriedwhere she will play the late Maria Callas, a famous opera singer.
The film will come from director Pablo Larraín, who was previously behind The critically acclaimed role of Kristen Stewart like Princess Diana in spencer and Natalie Portman’s Memorable Portrait of First Lady Jackie Kennedy in Jackie. As news of Jolie’s next role broke, the actress said this to Variety:
I take the responsibility for Maria’s life and legacy very seriously. I will give everything I can to meet the challenge. Pablo Larraín is a director I have admired for a long time. To have the chance to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with a screenplay by Steven Knight, is a dream.
Steven Knight was also behind the script for spenceras well as created Peaky Blinders and many other popular projects. Maria Callas, born in New York in 1923, was the daughter of Greek immigrants and soon took singing lessons. At the age of 13, she moved to Greece, accompanied by her mother, to study at the Athens Conservatory, and she began her career in Italy before returning to the United States in 1945.
The soprano has had a few scandals, including through a rivalry with Italian opera singer Renata Tebaldi, as well as an affair with Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. The film will follow Maria Callas during her last days in Paris in the 1970s, the singer dying in 1977 at the age of 53.
Given that every actress at the front of Pablo Larraín’s visions has won Best Actress nominations, it’s likely the role could put Angelina Jolie back in the Oscars conversation when Married is released. Previously, Jolie was nominated for girl interrupted in 2000 and won in 2009 for her role in Changeling.
Maria Callas has seen her share of controversy throughout her life in the public eye, and lately Angelina Jolie has made headlines for alleging ex-husband Brad Pitt physically abused her and their children. After the Hollywood couple divorced, they have long been embroiled in legal battles over custody of their children and the shared wine company. Amid these battles, it’s been a while since Jolie signed on for a new project, but this one looks like it could create a particularly powerful moment for the actress.
