Angelina Jolie calls for freedom for Iranian women as protests continue over Mahsa Amini’s death – deadline

Angelina Jolie has joined those demanding the freedom of Iranian women, as protests continue following the death of Mahsa Amini.

The actress, director and activist posted an impassioned plea on her Instagram account, saying Iranian women need “the freedom to live and breathe free from violence and threats”.

Jolie’s message comes as protests continue in Iran, following the death two weeks ago of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in police custody – after being arrested for wearing her hijab in a way incorrect. His autopsy recorded signs of brutality, which the state denies.

Dozens of people have died on the streets of Iran, mostly protesters but also members of the security forces, after the government warned of “decisive action without leniency” to try to quell the unrest.

Smaller but similarly motivated protests have taken place around the world.
