Andy Murray has won the 2022 ATP Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Prize after donating his prize to Ukraine.
The three-time Grand Slam winner announced in March that his entire prize money from then on would go to helping the country’s children, through UNICEF, after Russia invaded.
Murray announced that total was just over £510,000 when he won the prize on Thursday.
The 35-year-old said: “It seemed like something that would give me extra motivation this year.
“I thought I could also raise awareness and hopefully involve other people in helping.
“There are 7.5 million children in Ukraine and, after more than nine months of escalating conflict, 5.2 million of them need help.
“When you see images on the news of children who have been affected by things like this, it makes it even harder to digest.
“I have four young children who are really lucky that everything is going well for them.
“But being a parent affects you differently. You try to put yourself in their shoes.
“I’m lucky to try to make a difference, so hopefully the money that has been raised through Unicef can help some of the children who have been affected.
“In 2014 I became a UNICEF UK Ambassador and later that year received the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award for the first time.
“It is an honor to be named a recipient again.
“The reason for doing the right thing is not for an award like this, but it’s good that it’s appreciated somewhere.”
Murray failed to make it past the third round of a Grand Slam in 2022.
He hasn’t reached at least the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam since Wimbledon in 2017.
