The Android 14 developer preview and, later, the beta will follow the accelerated schedule established last year.
There are two developer previews, with the only other available in March:
- Developer preview 1 (February): First core release focused on developer feedback, with new features, APIs, and behavior changes.
- Developer Preview 2 (March): Incremental update with additional features, APIs, and behavior changes.
Like the last version, the Android 14 beta will start in April, which is a month earlier than usual. Historically, the first beta launch is scheduled for I/O in May, after the consumer features are announced on stage.
Platform Stability, with “final SDK/NDK APIs, as well as final internal APIs and application-oriented system behaviors,” is coming to beta 3. Google says, “From this point on, you’ll have multiple weeks before the official release to give it your final try.”
After that, in July, expect two more betas before the final release. There was no beta 5 last year.
The final version seems scheduled for August, Google having opted for a launch in the middle of the month last year.
- Beta 1 (April): Initial beta-quality release, live update for early adopters who sign up for Android beta.
- Beta 2 (May): Incremental beta-quality release.
- Beta 3 (June): first milestone of platform stability, including APIs and end behaviors. The game publishing also opens.
- Beta 4 (July): near-final builds for final testing.
- Beta 5 (July): near-final builds for final testing.
- Final version: Android 14 release for AOSP and ecosystem.
