MIUI 13, the next version of Xiaomi’s custom Android skin, is expected to go international with the global announcement of the company’s latest flagship series – the Xiaomi 12. Ahead of this launch event, a new discovery suggests that MIUI 13 will adopt the “monet” theme feature from Android 12 , which automatically changes accent colors throughout the user interface based on the wallpaper applied to the home screen.
Google introduced a major visual overhaul with Android 12, including an all-new Quick Settings panel, modernized widgets, and a system-wide theme overhaul as part of the Material You design philosophy. Material You, according to Google, is intended to allow users to express themselves through their phones. Therefore, one of the main benefits of Android with this visual overhaul is the ability to change accent colors in the UI based on the wallpaper applied by the user.
This theme feature, named “monet”, was first introduced in the Android 12 beta. Google’s intent behind adding monet to the Android 12 beta was to ensure that smartphone manufacturers using custom interfaces on their devices include this Dynamic Theme feature on their custom Android skins, while developers add Dynamic Theme and Material You support in their apps.
MIUI 13 could fully adopt Android 12’s dynamic theme
But apart from Google, which introduced the Pixel 6 series running Android 12 out of the box, none of the manufacturers have added support for this dynamic theme yet. Oppo’s ColorOS and Samsung’s One UI 4 allow users to choose accent colors from a limited number of hues, but none of that actually works as smartly or seamlessly as Android’s interface. originally on Pixel phones.
However, Xiaomi’s upcoming MIUI 13 update might bring some relief to users who were eagerly anticipating Android 12’s dynamic theme. Android expert Mishaal Rahman (by Twitter) shared screenshots of the Dynamic Theme feature implemented on MIUI. According to information available to Rahman, these screenshots are from MIUI 13 Beta 22.11.17 in China.
MIUI 13 China Beta 22.11.17 build based on Android 12 has apparently added dynamic theme support, according to the "Xiaomi With You" Telegram group.
What’s interesting is that this could be Google’s first truly “monet”-based OEM implementation. pic.twitter.com/y2zGQewufq

Rahman’s discovery was also corroborated by tipster Kacper Skrzypek, who often investigates and reverse-engineers MIUI source code to find new features. Skrzypek find references to a system flag in the source of MIUI 13 corresponding to the monet-based dynamic theme in Xiaomi’s upcoming UI.
This discovery validates the presence of the feature in MIUI 13. Now we have to wait for the global announcement and see if Xiaomi makes it available in the global version of MIUI or limits it to China.
More brands to add Android 12 dynamic theme
In November, Rahman also unearthed evidence suggesting that more than a dozen smartphone companies (including virtually every popular brand like OnePlus, Motorola, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, etc.) will finally add support for the dynamic theming to their custom Android skins in future Android 12 based releases.
We don’t know when that will finally happen, but we expect more companies to try to replace Xiaomi and introduce this clever feature into their custom adaptations of Android.
