PORTLAND – Antifa and other protesters – including some anarchists – burned buildings and properties in downtown Portland over the weekend, including destroying an Apple Store and vandalizing restaurants, a Nike store and a Starbucks coffee.
Some leftist and anarchist protesters also gathered outside a Portland police station. They have already torched federal buildings, including Immigration and Customs Offices (ICE).
The unrest in Portland also included protesters setting portable toilets and dumpsters on fire as they protested deadly police gunfire in Minnesota and Illinois.
Antifa focuses on fighting fascist and right-wing groups, but is also anti-police and anti-government. A number of anarchists are also part of the anti-fascist movement. They are also anti-capitalists.
There were also Black Lives Matter and other protests this weekend in Washington, Baltimore and other cities over the fatal police shootings against Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota and Adam Toledo, 13. , in Chicago.
Big companies like Apple, Starbucks and Nike – which have been targeted by Antifa in Portland – have been financial backers of Black Lives Matter and other progressive causes.
The turmoil comes amid the trial of former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd last year. The domestic unrest also comes as the FBI and the Biden administration continue to focus on arresting Trump supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6.
