England Georgia Hall contested for a second major title with an under-par second round at ANA Inspiration in California.
The 24-year-old carded four birdies to reach five under after two rounds at Mission Hills Country Club.
She is tied for fifth – two headshots away – with much of the field yet to complete their second lap.
Thailand’s Moriya Jutanugarn leads the club in the first major tournament of the year with seven under.
Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist, China’s Shanshan Feng and Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit – who has yet to start her second round – are all adrift of the Jutanugarn.
Feng’s exposure on day one drew attention as the 31-year-old former world number one made her first competitive start in 16 months.
Michelle Wie also impressed on day one after returning to action after injury and the birth of her first child, but three bogeys in her first five holes of the second round brought her overall score down to one.
Earlier Friday, Ireland’s Leona Maguire split the lead with six under, but the 26-year-old lost two shots on her last nine holes.
England duo Charley Hull and Bronte Law have yet to start their second round and have sat on three under – four headshots.
