Just in case you’re wondering about the future of American Idol jury, we have some great news to announce today!
On the Wednesday show of Hello America, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan have all been confirmed to return to the reality TV channel when they return to ABC in 2022. Note that this is also an extremely special season for American Idol – season 20! There aren’t many shows that have taken this step and we hope they spend some time celebrating it properly.
Bryan, Perry, and Richie have all been on the judges since the show was relaunched on ABC and at this point we understand why they would want to continue to be a part of it. Not only is this a gig that (obviously) pays well, but it gives them a great platform to promote their music. They also have great chemistry between them and we never felt the judges were a big deal with this show. For American Idol, the most important thing they have to keep working on is the star making process; it has been so many years since there has been a champion who has become some sort of massive star; there are many that have faded into the background after just a few years.
If we had to guess, we would say that American Idol will be back on ABC at some point after awards season next year – they won’t want to risk the start of the broadcast season in the face of some pretty intense competition. It might not be the success that defines pop culture like it was years ago, but it attracts a consistent following and generates good social media traffic.
