“Am I surprised? No’ – Wayne Rooney delivers verdict as Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Manchester United

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United had no choice but to terminate Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract.

The Red Devils announced on Tuesday that they had mutually agreed to terminate the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s £500,000-a-week contract following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

Ronaldo got what he wanted and has now left Man United

The 37-year-old has expressed his frustrations with manager Erik ten Hag, the club hierarchy and the Glazer family.

They weren’t just the target of his scathing criticism as he also took aim at former teammates including Rooney, who had questioned his conduct this season.

This conduct included refusing to feature against Tottenham this season, which led to him being dropped from the United squad.

Responding to Rooney’s comments on talkSPORT, where he said “keep your head down”, Ronaldo said: “I don’t know why he criticizes me so badly…probably because he’s finished his career and I’m still playing a high level. I’m not going to say that I look better than him. What is true…”

Despite the apparent breakdown in their relationship, Man United record goalscorer Rooney wished Ronaldo nothing but the best.

Speaking on Live TV with Sports 18, Rooney said: “Am I surprised? No.

“There was no other choice but it’s a shame because he’s been a fantastic servant for the club.

“I wish him the best wherever he goes.”

Ronaldo had just six months left on his contract but his exit now looks the best for all parties.

United issued a brief statement announcing his departure but made no mention of his interview with Piers Morgan.

It read: “The club thanks him for his immense contribution over two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.

“Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik Ten Hag and working together to achieve success on the pitch.”
