AlphaTauri has set a deadline in September to fix the specifications for the gearbox borrowed from Red Bull next year – even though its sister team is taking longer to develop it further.
As part of a closer relationship between the two teams belonging to Red Bull, Toro Rosso will continue to take on a multitude of parts, including the suspension, gearbox and hydraulics.
But with the major rule 1 rule changes for next year, which means there is no option to take designs that are a year old, as has happened until The two teams have now agreed on a timetable for when certain components must be approved.
Asked by Autosport about how the working relationship will change due to the changes of 2021, team director Franz Tost said: “Next year we will also get the front suspension, the rear suspension, the gearbox gears and hydraulics.
“But it will be decided in August / September if Red Bull decides” okay, this is the gearbox we use “or if they are still in the wind tunnel [to continue working on it].
“And then maybe we will have the gearbox which is designed in September, because we won’t wait or we can’t wait until November or December because then we don’t have a gearbox speeds! “
Tost said that while all the changes after September would be minimal, they were the kind of marginal gains that mean a lot to Red Bull.
“We will get the parts ready for design in September,” he said. “If Red Bull technologies are still studying for their car, then they might have something different. But it won’t be completely different.
“Maybe the drive shaft is a little lower or higher, or the differential is lower / higher or further.
“It will only be a few millimeters but for a team like Red Bull Racing, it is important because these small changes or many small changes can become a big performance differential.”
