The two-time world champion made his first Grand Prix start since 2018 in Sakhir after two years competing in the endurance world championship and the Dakar rally among others.
Despite the long absence, Alonso made his way into the top 10 in qualifying and battled for a points score before a sandwich casing lodged in a brake duct forced him to retire 32 laps after the race.
After Sunday, the Spaniard felt he still needed to iron out the mistakes and regain more speed and confidence at the wheel.
“It was cool,” Alonso said of his race. “I had a few good battles and some of them had happy endings, some didn’t because we were overwhelmed.
“But I need to find more rhythm of myself and find more confidence and I need to extract more from the car, from the brakes and from the start better.
“It wasn’t too bad but there is a lot of room for improvement on my end.
“At the pit stops I think the guys did an amazing job, but my position in the second stop was wrong. It’s small things and mistakes that I keep making in practice and this first race, but hopefully I will be able to perform better in races two and three personally. “

“I think we always said from the start that it was a very interesting activity and Alpine is in F1 for big things. Maybe 2021 is a continuation of 2020 and we are building momentum and something more. important as we approach 2022.
“I hope you enjoy this feedback.”
Despite a disappointing weekend for Alpine, Alonso admitted that it was difficult to judge the team’s position in the pecking order.
“It’s hard to say. I think we’ve seen different results and a little bit of mixed feelings for everyone including us. Sometimes we look better sometimes we look down a bit.
“We’ll need a few races to get a more established order, so let’s wait and see. Our job is to work harder and identify our weaknesses if there are any, work on them and hold on to our strengths. . It’s an interesting season for everyone. “
