Alonso was caught at the first corner at Miami when Hamilton dove inside, forcing the Spaniard to move wide and crash into Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll, who in turn collected McLaren’s Lando Norris.

After suffering a puncture in the incident, Alonso fell to the back of the pack and was not able to recover much as he returned 17th.

After digging into this weekend why he was penalized during the Chinese sprint for his involvement in a collision with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, he suggested Hamilton would get away with any penalty for what happened here.

Asked about the possibility of the FIA taking action, Alonso told DAZN: “We will see what they decide. I guess they won’t decide anything, because he’s not Spanish. But I think he ruined the race for a few people, especially Norris, who had a very fast car and he was eliminated in that incident.

Alonso said that, aware of the penalties he had been given in recent races, he did not want to take any risks by overtaking other cars once he was at the back.

“Maybe today I wasn’t penalized, but I’m still penalized,” he said. “Today it’s the same thing. I was behind Ocon, I could perhaps take a risk and overtake him, but logically I don’t take a risk to avoid being penalized.

“So I tried to finish the race, which is 19 laps, and go back to the team to talk about the changes.”

Alonso added that the sprint effectively turned into a practice session for him, so that he and the team could better understand tire degradation for the main grand prix.

“We had no interest in sprint racing,” he said. “We were just going to check the degradation and everything else for tomorrow and in the end we succeeded. For us, it’s free practice, it’s not really a race.

“Now the important part of the race begins, qualifying and tomorrow the 57 laps. I think we can take a conclusion from this sprint for the parc ferme which opens now and see if we can improve the car a little.
