Swiss authorities prevented organizers of Geneva Motor Show from holding 90e edition of the event this month at the Palexpo center by banning any public gathering of more than 1,000 people. Although this somewhat unexpected situation has created a lot of problems for car manufacturers, many of them have already switched to plan B.
For example, Alfa Romeo will reveal the much anticipated Giulia GTA on the company’s website later today. A Facebook a post describing the final teaser reveals that the world premiere should take place at 4.30 p.m. CET, so 3.30 p.m. GMT or 10.30 a.m. EST depending on where you are reading Motor1.com of.
The picture itself shows a good deal of the front bumper with an aggressive splitter and a large dose of carbon fiber. The air intakes have been completely redesigned and we notice a brake cooling duct with a dive plan similar to what you will find on some racing cars. That could mean the car has improved the brakes to match what could be a more powerful engine, as some say the Ferrari-powered 2.9-liter V6 twin turbo will exceed the 600 horsepower mark.
If the Giulia will indeed dust off the nickname of GTA (Gran Turismo Alleggerita), it means that the hot sedan will lose weight taking into account the fact that “alleggerita” means “light”. There are likely some chassis and suspension adjustments planned for the new version, which is not known at this point if it will end up as a special limited edition or a regular production car.
There could be more to reveal today than the Giulia GTA, as Alfa Romeo has released a subset of teasers on social media. Above and below, these might have to do with the rumored GTAm, a track-focused special edition with far less weight. Reports indicate that he will lose some of the soundproofing material and may even forgo the rear seats to make room for a roll bar.
While the Giulia GTA is supposed to get a carbon fiber rear spoiler, the GTAm will have a look wing. Both would have a center-mounted dual exhaust system, wider fenders, and several aerodynamic improvements.
With the official revelation around the corner, the wait is almost over. Look at this space to see what the Italians did to confront the Germans.
