Syracuse basketball recently hosted 2023 four-star guard Mike Williams from Maryland on an official visit, and according to a media report, that visit went quite well.
As we noted not too long ago, some national recruiting analysts had suggested that a strong official visit to the ‘Cuse could put the Orange ahead for the 6ft 4in Williams, who is the a top-100 prospect and top-15 shooter in his class, according to 247Sports.
Certainly, the fact that his trip to the Hill was positive is an encouraging development. At the same time, however, Syracuse basketball coaches have offered scholarships to more than 20 players in the Class of 2023, with no commitments to date.
Understandably, this has left many Orange fans feeling frustrated with the team’s recruiting efforts this cycle. In fairness, though, the ‘Cuse brought in a six-member 2022 class as well as a big-man transfer this past offseason, so it’s conceivable Orange’s 2023 cycle won’t be all that big.

A senior at Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland, Maryland, Williams holds about 20 offers from a range of high-level programs.
In late July, ‘Cuse’s coaches offered Williams, who earlier this summer helped lead Baltimore-based team Thrill to the Under Armor Association League 17U Division Championship.
While it looks like Syracuse basketball is in a good position to potentially land Williams, he has also officially visited Clemson and DePaul, and has scheduled additional official visits to Wake Forest on Sept. 23 and LSU on Sept. 22. October, according to reports.
Williams also plans to make an unofficial visit to VCU on September 30. According to a recent article by SyracuseOnSI editor Mike McAllister, Williams is likely to make an engagement announcement “sometime after the visit to LSU.”
Williams told McAllister he thinks Syracuse’s basketball system aligns well with his style of play. Orange’s priority recruiting target also appreciates the family atmosphere woven between Syracuse’s basketball coaches , players, staff members and others.
During his official visit, Williams was at the JMA Wireless Dome last Saturday afternoon as Syracuse football passed Purdue in scoring a touchdown in the closing seconds of the game.
Although Williams has more visits to come, the Orange made a big impression on him, according to McAllister’s report. “It’s definitely at the top of my list,” Williams said.
