Hollywood has recently undergone drastic changes. With Covid-19, several movies have ditched the traditional theater mode and gone with OTT platforms. The most notable company to do so was the MCU. They produced web series suitable for their OTT platform and also helped reduce costs and increase engagement.

Previously, there were rumors that former WWE Superstar Dwayne Johnson was set to reprise the role of Captain Jack Sparrow, after Johnny Depp refused to work with Disney in the future.
Depp stopped working with Disney, after Disney removed him from their project due to allegations against him. With Depp now out of the picture, rumors have swirled that Johnson has put himself in Jack Sparrow’s shoes.
DIVE DEEPER
But now the latest reports from GiantFreakinRobot suggest something else. According to these new reports, Disney is now planning to revive the series in an animated version. The franchise had its last movie in 2017, after which nothing was released. Johnny Depp had become the face of the franchise, and revamping him might do Disney more harm than good.
So, a safer approach would be to turn the franchise into an animated franchise on Disney+, like MCU did with “What If…?” where they recast Tony Stark’s Iron Man with Mick Wingert. Turning the series into animation would be a major turning point and could lead to potential new builds and cost far less than an expensive theatrical release.
While fans may be disappointed with a new Jack Sparrow, they still need to move on and adapt, as this could be the doorway to the future.
