New updates are added at the bottom of this story …
The original story (published November 20, 2021) follows:
Adobe Photoshop Elements is a popular and easy-to-use graphics editing tool that allows users to create, edit, and organize images. This software is available on Windows and macOS.
However, it appears that this software is not yet fully optimized for use on Apple’s latest macOS 12 Monterey.
According to reports, some users are now saying that Photoshop Elements 21 and 22 versions are not working for them after upgrading to the latest macOS Monterey.
Photoshop Elements crashes on macOS 12 Monterey
Since Apple released macOS Monterey, users have reported crashing issues with Photoshop Elements. Users say the software sometimes launches, but most of the time they get a “not responding” error and have to force quit.
Here are some reports for reference:
After installing Monterey, Adobe Photoshop Elements 2021 sometimes launches, but most of the time I just get the ‘not responding’ message and have to force it all. Adobe support does not of course offer any usable information. (Source)
My 2021 items could not open once I moved to Monterey. I bought Elements 2022 (two months earlier than I should have) to fix the problem, but it didn’t help. Sometimes it opens, sometimes it doesn’t. A person cannot work that way. How the hell Adobe, the most popular graphic design software, fails to coordinate with Apple, the most popular platform for graphic designers. This is a world class mistake on Adobe’s part. There is a CEO who deserves to be fired. (Source)
Meanwhile, an Adobe community manager, who acknowledged the issue, said the company is aware of Photoshop Elements crashing on macOS Monterey and is currently investigating the issue.
Until this issue is completely resolved, those affected can try the user-suggested workaround and see if it works.
I have used a workaround for now until Adobe came up with a solution to make Items 2021 and 2022 compatible with OS Monterey. First, I start Elements 2021 after restarting my iMac 2020 27 ″, let it run (ie I don’t quit the app). Seems to work that way. Although I hope Adobe will come up with a fix soon. (Source)
We hope that Adobe fixes the compatibility issue of Photoshop Elements 21/22 with macOS 12 Monterey soon as users who have purchased the software cannot access it.
That said, we’ll keep you updated on how this story unfolds as we notice anything new, so stay tuned.

Adobe is actively working with Apple to resolve issues with macOS 12.0 Monterey. As we have more information we will update the forums. Thank you for your patience.
Update 2 (November 29)
IST 11:54 am: One of the affected users seems to have found a possible workaround for this bug. Below is an excerpt from his report.
I have found a workaround that “works”. Shut down your mac, then open it in safe mode (on my old mac, hold down the Shift key until you see the Apple logo). Then you can open the photo editor.
Having said that, I will definitely be looking for an alternative to photoshop. They clearly don’t care about their customers.
Granted, it’s not the best workaround ever, but in a pinch, it could get you out of a sticky situation, so it might be worth a try.
