A new Acura Integra arrives. Haven’t you heard? It won’t be revealed until spring 2022, but if Acura continues with new teasers roughly every two weeks, there won’t be much left to reveal until then. The latest comes in the form of a short video that confirms something not too surprising. The new Integra will offer a manual transmission.
This is good news for enthusiasts looking for direct control in an era of upgraded automatic transmissions and dual-clutch paddle-shift transmissions. It’s also an ode to the predecessor Integra, which all offered manual transmission. Acura is very keen to evoke every bit of nostalgia he can get with the new Integra, as seen in this video which opens with a top-down view of the OG ‘Teg’s five-speed stick as a screaming four-cylinder engine provides the soundtrack. A shift to second brings another five-speed Integra, another pops up for third and we get the Integra-with-a-un-name RSX for fourth gear.
Finally, the shift to fifth reveals a new stem with an aluminum soft top, six speeds and contrasting red stitching on the leather-wrapped button. But is it really a new rod? The center console layout looks a lot like the new Honda Civic Hatchback, with a bank of buttons on the left and a hint of a cup holder at the base of the manual trunk. The new Integra is expected to share its foundation with the Civic, but if this teaser is any clue, it could share more than that.
Acura surprised the world by announcing the rebirth of the Integra in August 2021. Obviously, the brand is hoping to rekindle excitement amid its current lineup of vehicles bearing alphabet soup names. But we’ve seen several teasers already and the official debut is still several months away. Plus, teasers showing the familiar Acura headlights and a five-door sportback shape didn’t inspire much confidence that the Integra will be much more than a massaged TLX. Frankly, it’s hard to get excited about a revival of Integra based on what we’ve seen so far.
If Acura continues at its current pace with teasers, the automotive world could be very Integral tired by the time the new car finally breaks cover in spring 2022 – especially if it fails to establish its own identity once official reveal.
