“We have something here for you tonight,” Halls said. “You see, folks, this year marks Tracy Grimshaw’s 40th birthday at Channel Nine.

“You are an exceptional journalist, you are a wonderful colleague to all of us in the office and a very good friend. So Trace, I want you to sit down and enjoy what you’re about to see: 40 years of TG on Nine. ‘

The tribute was presented by Nine News veteran Steve Liebmann, who showed viewers a young Grimshaw as a reporter in Nine’s newsroom in Melbourne in 1981.

A series of clips then aired on a fresh-faced Grimshaw reporting different news for Nine before moving on to his years of presenting National Nine News.

The journalist began hosting National Nine News in 1995, then the Midday Show, the tribute of which also screened.

That same year, Grimshaw began working on the Today show with Liebmann, which he described as a “great professional wedding”.

The tribute shed light on important stories that Grimshaw had related over the years, including the Thredbo landslide, the death of Princess Diana and the collapse of the Beaconsfield mine.

In January 2006, Grimshaw replaced Ray Martin as host of A Current Affair, perhaps his best-known press role.

“She made me ashamed,” Martin said in the tribute. ‘She’s so good. I love what she does and I love watching her.

The special featured several of Tracy ACA’s notable interviews, including her talks with former NRL player Matthew Johns, disgraced TV host Don Burke, former Prime Minister Bob Hawke and One Nation leader Pauline Hanson.

Most recently, Grimshaw had the opportunity to speak with Prime Minister Scott Morrison about the rape allegations made by former political staff member Brittany Higgins.

This was the first interview Mr. Morrison had sat down for regarding the allegations and the effect it had on his government.

The tribute then returned to Grimshaw, who looked baffled and emotional.

“I have been very, very busy, but I have had 40 years to be busy,” said humbly.
