Japan pulled off one of the best upsets of the World Cup so far by beating Germany in their opening game.
But the Samurai Blue have also earned praise off the pitch for their fans cleaning up the stands, while their players have left their dressing rooms spotless.
After describing Japan’s 2-1 victory over Germany which saw the 2014 champions throw away their lead as “poetic justice”, McCoist praised the nation for their gestures off the pitch.
“I don’t know if you’ve heard or seen the story of the Japanese players and staff cleaning the locker room, they left it absolutely meticulously clean,” the talkSPORT Breakfast host said.
“As if that weren’t enough, there are images of Japanese fans walking around with trash bags even after games.
“I have to say this is my story for the day, it’s absolutely brilliant.”
Footage of the Samurai Blue dressing room at the Khalifa International Stadium after Wednesday’s final whistle showed they had left it in pristine condition.
As if it wasn’t heartwarming enough that the players took the time to tidy up the space after their historic victory, they also left a thank you note, along with a fan of origami birds.
Their supporters also showed a touch of class, with footage showing them walking around the stadium with bin bags to help clean up after the game.
It’s not the first time they’ve done it either, they also do it in the tournament’s opening clash, Qatar vs Ecuador.
With a win over Hansi Flick’s side, Japan will now look to beat Costa Rica on Sunday.
If Germany lose or draw against Spain, Japan will advance to the round of 16, as Germany and Costa Rica cannot match their total of six points.
