‘Absolute tragedy’: At least 13 injured after car rams into Pa. fundraiser – NBC 10 Philadelphia

More than a dozen people were injured on Saturday after a vehicle hit a crowd in Berwick, Pennsylvania, authorities said.

According to NBC affiliate WBRE-TV, the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. outside the poison department restaurant and left several people injured when the driver slammed into a crowd along West 2nd Street.

Geisinger Medical Center in nearby Danville saw 13 patients mid-evening, spokeswoman Natalie Buyny said by email. The conditions of the injured were not available.

“As of 8:30 p.m. on Saturday August 13, Geisinger is providing care to 13 patients following an incident in Berwick. Staff assess and triage patients for appropriate care,” Geisinger spokeswoman Natalie Buyny wrote in a statement.

In a Facebook post, Intoxicology Department, the restaurant where the fundraiser took place, said it would close until further notice.

“Today has been an absolute tragedy. We will be closed until further notice. Please respect our privacy as we grieve and try to process the events that have transpired. Thank you,” the restaurant wrote.

Police said the car crashed into the crowd as they attended an event to benefit victims of a house fire in Nescopeck that killed seven adults and three children last week.

Among the dead in the house fire were seven adults and three children aged 5, 6 and 7.

It is not yet known what caused the accident or the conditions of the victims at Berwick.
