Although the two represent the same school, the UNF men’s and women’s basketball teams could not have had more different perspectives in the ASUN Conference preseason polls.
Last week, conference headquarters in Atlanta announced that the annual preseason polls had been released. This includes the media poll and the coaches poll.
An important caveat is needed here: preseason polls do not correlate with actual success. A team could be chosen to win their conference and finish last.
The ranking in the poll for each respective Ospreys team is a reflection of last year’s performance. The women’s squad are coming off a very promising season, while the men’s squad has had a somewhat difficult slate in a year of rebuilding.
The women’s team’s 14-11 is not indicative of the promise the team has shown. Although he failed in the ASUN tournament, several big wins showed what this group is capable of. They are looking to reload this year, while adding even more talent.
The ladies placed second in the coaches poll, while placing third in the media poll. This matches the team’s top rankings in these polls, the best post since 2012-13.
Meanwhile, the men’s team sits in the top half of the polls, but not as high as their female counterparts. They placed sixth in the media poll and seventh in the coaches poll. An interesting note is that they received a first place vote in the Coaches Poll, meaning a conference coach picked the Ospreys to win the conference.
Ultimately, these polls should be taken with a grain of salt. They provide a decent benchmark for expectations for the season, but that’s all they really are. Only time and results will really tell.
