NEW YORK: Trump administration officials postponed a critical meeting to March 11 to discuss potential new U.S. restrictions on technology sales to Huawei and China, people familiar with the matter said.
The cabinet-level meeting was scheduled for Friday but has been postponed. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of the Treasury, Steve Mnuchin, are expected to be part of the meeting scheduled for next month, residents said.
MPs from many agencies met last week to discuss the agenda, but made no recommendations on how to deal with the various proposals related to China, Huawei’s telecommunications equipment and parts. ‘commercial aircraft, people said.
A result was clear after President Donald Trump’s tweets last week detonated a proposal to prevent General Electric Co from selling engines for the new Chinese passenger jet. As a senior US official told Reuters, the Commerce Department “fully intends” to comply with the president’s directive authorizing sales. GE produces the engines with Safran in France.
The White House National Security Council did not respond to a request for comment. Huawei said it did not comment on speculation.
Those aware of the case spoke on condition of anonymity because the deliberations of the government are not public. Trade, state, defense, and treasury departments did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Among the topics on the meeting agenda are ways to broaden the U.S. authority to stop more foreign shipments of products with U.S. technology to Huawei Technologies Ltd. May’s blacklist failed to cut supply to the tech giant.
