Iran v USA: Facts of the match
- American Yunus Musah will be 20 on the day of this game and could become the first American to play in the World Cup on his birthday. If established, he will also become the youngest American player to start his first three World Cup matches, overtaking Landon Donovan in 2002 (20 years, 102 days).
- Walker Zimmerman has completed 148 assists for the United States in the group stage so far, 33 more than any other American player. The only American player to have done more in the group stage since 1966 is Claudio Reyna in 1998 (169), whose son Giovanni Reyna made his World Cup debut alongside Zimmerman in the 0-0 draw against England.
- Mehdi Taremi was directly involved in three of Iran’s four goals in the 2022 World Cup (2 goals, 1 assist). Taremi created eight chances against Wales, which was the most chances by a player in a World Cup group stage game since Tranquillo Barnetta for Switzerland against Honduras in 2010 ( also 8). This year, Taremi has already created the most chances for an Iranian player in a single World Cup tournament (9).
- The United States drew 0-0 with England in their last World Cup match, their first goalless draw in the competition in their 35th game. They haven’t kept consecutive World Cup clean sheets since their first two matches in 1930.
- Five of Iran’s last six World Cup goals have come in the 90th minute, including three of four at this year’s tournament. Two in 2022 came after the 100th minute – Mehdi Taremi’s penalty against England (102:30) and Ramin Rezaeian against Wales (100:37).
- The United States have won two of their last 14 World Cup matches (D6 L6), drawing at this year’s edition. They have never drawn three times in a row in the World Cup.
- Following their 2-0 win over Wales on MD2, Iran are looking to win two games in a single World Cup tournament for the first time. One of their previous three wins was against the United States in 1998.
- The United States have lost their third group stage game in seven of their eight appearances with this format at the FIFA World Cup, with the exception of a 1-0 victory against Algeria in 2010.
- Iran beat the United States 2-1 in the teams’ only previous meeting at the FIFA World Cup, with the win knocking the United States out of the 1998 edition in France.
- This is the first meeting between Iran and the United States in any competition since January 2000, with the teams playing out a 1-1 draw in a friendly match in California.
