Rory McIlroy returned to the top of the world rankings for the first time in more than two years by retaining his CJ Cup title in South Carolina.
The Northern Irishman earned a one-stroke win at Congaree Golf Club, shooting a four-under 67 to end the tournament at 17 under.
American Kurt Kitayama also hit 67 on Sunday, and briefly leveled McIlroy with a birdie in the 12th.
However, McIlroy himself birdied three straight to get clear.
“It means a lot,” an emotional McIlroy said after claiming his 23rd PGA Tour victory.
“I’ve worked so hard over the past 12 months to get back to this place. I feel like I’m enjoying this game as much as ever.
“I love golf and when I go out there and play with that joy, it’s definitely shown over the last 12 months. It’s great.”
“I’m really proud of myself”
Holding a one-shot lead heading into the final day, McIlroy knew a victory would take him above Scottie Scheffler and to the top of the world rankings for the ninth time.
A second-place finish would also have seen him pass Scheffler, as the American finished tied for 45th on one under.
For McIlroy, birdies on the 14th, 15th and 16th holes gave him a three-shot cushion over his nearest rival Kitayama.
The lead allowed the four-time major winner to head home in relative comfort despite the bogey of the final two holes.
“It’s a big achievement, I’m really proud of myself right now,” he continued.
“The journey of trying to get the best out of myself is the most satisfying thing.
“I never feel like I understood this game, I don’t think I ever will, but every day I wake up trying to get closer.”
