Six people were killed at a birthday party in Colorado Springs early Sunday after a man opened fire inside a house before killing himself.
An unidentified suspect attended the party, located in a mobile home community, entered the residence where people were gathered and started shooting around 12:18 a.m., Colorado Springs police said. He is believed to be the boyfriend of one of the victims, based on a preliminary investigation.
The children who were at the party are unharmed and are in the care of family members, police said.
Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski said officers and investigators handling the case were “incredibly shaken.”
“This is something you hope will never happen in your own community, where you are at home,” Niski said. “When these types of unspeakable acts occur, nothing can be done to completely rebuild what has been lost or to replace those who are no longer with us.”
Authorities found six people dead at the scene and a seriously injured man upon arrival at the scene. This man later died in a hospital. The victims have not been identified.
It is a “senseless act of violence” that has left the community in mourning, said Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers.
“We ask for the public’s patience with the investigation and we are seeking the sensitivity of our media partners as the CSPD completes a comprehensive investigation to provide responses to families and friends affected by this tragedy,” Suthers said in a statement Sunday.
