Real Madrid have feared Bayern Munich so much over the years that they nicknamed the German giants “La Bestia Negra”. With Harry Kane & Co. now in the ranks, Spaniards have even more reason to expect the worst when the two teams meet in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals this year…

1) The Black Bestia
This season inclusive, Madrid (17) and Bayern (13) have appeared in more Champions League semi-finals than any other team in the competition’s history. Add to that its predecessor, the European Cup, and those records extend to 33 and 27 respectively.
Then there’s Madrid’s record as 14-time European champions, seven more than AC Milan in second place and eight better than Bayern’s six. However, there is no other club on the continent that The Whites fear more than La Bestia Negra.
No team outside of Spain has beaten Madrid more times than Bayern (12), earning them the nickname which translates to “The Black Beast”. In fact, Bayern have been a constant threat to Spanish clubs, with an overall record of 69 matches, 35 wins, 15 draws and 19 losses.
2) The comforts of home
Bayern’s record at home against Spanish teams reads better: P26, W17, D5, L4. Their recent European domination, however, is far from limited to the Spanish opposition.
This season, Bayern have won four and drawn five in the Champions League at the Allianz Arena, scoring 10 times in the process, an average of two goals per game. This extended their unbeaten home run in the competition to 15 matches (12 wins, 3 draws).

This streak dates back to April 2021, when they lost 3-2 to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals.
3) Kane leads the charge
Kane did it again on Matchday 30, scoring a magnificent free-kick to take his Bundesliga tally to 33 for the season as Bayern beat Union Berlin. In all competitions, Kane now has 40 goals in 41 appearances since his arrival this summer and leads the race for the European Golden Boot.
Only Kylian Mbappé (eight) has scored more than Kane (seven) in the UCL this season and it is exactly these kinds of big games that the England captain was signed for. With Leroy Sané expected back in support and Jamal Musiala fresh as a daisy after being rested this weekend, he also has plenty of firepower in his side.
Bayern’s defense is equally impressive. Manuel Neuer now holds the Champions League record for most clean sheets (58) after blanking Arsenal in the second leg of the quarters, while Eric Dier and Matthijs de Ligt formed a strong partnership in the center of the defense, where they are flanked by Joshua Kimmich on the right and any of Alphonso Davies, Raphaël Guerreiro and Noussair Mazraoui on the left.
4) Last Chance Fair
Kane also joined Bayern to add trophies to his CV and the 30-year-old will be desperate not to end the campaign empty-handed. Especially after having already lost the DFL Super Cup and the DFB Cup.
Kane is not the only one. After all, this is a club – and a group of players – accustomed to success and which had an unprecedented history as German champions until the arrival of Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen . Even at that moment, Die Werkself It took 29 matches without defeat to dethrone Bayern.
Then there is Thomas Tuchel, whose mandate ends this summer. He will do everything in his power to win a Champions League winners’ medal when he leaves Munich and Bayern will be buoyed by their manager’s 100% record in the UCL semi-finals, having reached the final in 2019/20 and 2020/21, winning the latter competition with Chelsea.
5) Additional incentive
Beating Madrid and qualifying for another Champions League final would be an achievement for Bayern. Better yet, it could set up a showdown in the centerpiece that will truly be spine-tingling and hair-raising.
Indeed, on the other side of the draw is Borussia Dortmund, who have their own semi-final showdown with Paris Saint-Germain. If both teams progress, it would not only guarantee Germany an additional Champions League place in next year’s expanded competition, but it would also give us a Klassiker final.
The last time this happened was in 2012/13, at the same venue as this year’s final, Wembley. Bayern emerged victorious that year and would love the opportunity to see history repeat itself and beat their domestic rivals for European glory.
