It may not be possible to step into the infuriating realm of the multiverse like Marvel superheroes Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch, but we can try to get closer to that world by visiting real places. Marvel movies have been shot in magical places all over the world, and this is one way for fans to experience the magic of MCU movies. So let’s take a look at where your favorite MCU superheroes shot some of the iconic scenes.
Hydra Research Base, Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
The start of the movie Avengers: Age of Ultron shows the titular superhero team making their way through a forest in the fictional country of Sokovia. The scene takes place near a castle-like HYDRA research base. This scene was actually filmed at Fort Bard or Forte di Bard, in Bard, Aosta Valley, Italy. The old fort was used as an outpost to protect the valley from French leader Napoleon Bonaparte and his army in the 19th century. Fort Bard is currently the seat of the Museum of the Alps.
While Fort Bard was used to film the exterior, Dover Castle in England was used to film the interior of the HYDRA Research Facility.
Forests of Asgard, Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
In Thor: Ragnarok, Heimdall, played by Idris Elba, leads a large group of Asgardians through the forests of Asgard to find refuge in the mountains. The majority of director Taika Waititi was filmed on sound stages in Australia, while Tamborine National Park and Cedar Creek Falls in southeast Queensland were used for forests and Asgardian waterfalls.
Cedar Creek Falls, between Airlie Beach and Proserpine, Nth QLD, Australia. This big splash in the water on the right is from my niece who snuck up and jumped. Bloody young 😐 pic.twitter.com/QQ5ySYfJ4u— Kim ✊🇺🇦 (@Kimpossibillity) April 22, 2022
Kaecillius’ dark spell in Doctor Strange (2016)
The chapel inside Exeter College in Oxford, England served as the perfect backdrop when Kaecillius summoned Dormammu from the Dark Dimension with a spell from the Book of Cagliostro.
I visited Exeter College today (Open Oxford) which has to be one of my favorite colleges. The fact that they filmed Doctor Strange in the Chapel is a plus! pic.twitter.com/mlpRR0C7YW— Emily 💙 (@emsmc) September 15, 2019
Museum of Great Britain, Black Panther (2018)
In 2018, Black Panther, the film’s antagonist Erik Killmonger, played by Michael B. Jordan, visits the Museum of Great Britain, a replacement for the British Museum in London. Instead of traveling to England, the cast and crew of the film filmed the scene at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia.
The first scene of Black Panther takes place in the “Museum of Great Britain” when Killmonger first corrects the curator about the true origin and purpose of the object (which happens all the time IRL) and then takes it back. Black Widow (2021)
Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh filmed a crucial action scene in Budapest. From the train station to some main streets, the main cast are seen escaping from the Taskmaster who is chasing them on a giant tank.
Which of these places are you planning to visit?
