Letting a car sit for years can have devastating consequences unless it’s sealed in a temperature-controlled lair alongside a team of mechanics hired to keep it in top condition. But this is not possible for all cars because some are left by the wayside to rot, like this BMW 850i from 1991, parked in a garden in 2011 and left abandoned. The weather hasn’t been nice, but that hasn’t stopped a mechanic from putting some weight back on the coupe.
It takes a lot to get the BMW back on track, with the latest installment in the video series showing a lot of work to be done to get it to work on its own. The video begins with the mechanic fixing the clutch pedal, which sticks to the ground when pressed before moving on to the brakes and brake fluid. He then replaces the coolant, repairs the timing chain, and cleans the throttle bodies.

Once it has replaced the transmission and differential fluid, the BMW is ready for its first drive in 10 years – and that’s a hit, too. It is unregistered so could not drive it on public roads but the test drive in the store parking lot shows it to be functioning properly, able to move, steer and stop on its own. However, it’s not all pink and sunshine, as the brake pedal is a bit too soft, the cause probably being the brake pressure accumulator.
The 30-year-old BMW, even for its age, still looks good, even though the Calypso Red paintwork has seen better days. The interior is also in remarkable condition, with the power tilt and telescoping steering wheel still working, as well as the memory function. The powerful 5.0-liter V12 comes back to life, making about 300 horsepower (223 kilowatts). It’s not much by today’s standards, but it was enough for the top-of-the-line model when new.
