2024 Volkswagen Tiguan spied with clever camouflage and fake exhaust tips

Having such a vast lineup, it constantly feels like Volkswagen is on the verge of giving a car a mid-cycle facelift or stepping it up to the next generation. 2023 will usher in a new Tiguan, but in the meantime, the compact crossover is undergoing cold-weather testing to fix issues before its market launch. A cleverly camouflaged prototype was spotted by our spies, trying (but failed) to look like the current model.

Those decals you see on the headlights and taillights were put there to give the illusion that this is just the Tiguan on sale today. Also, the silver stripes on the grille serve the same purpose, as do the C-shaped accents on the front bumper. More of the same counterfeit can be found running along the bottom of the doors as well as on the rear bumper. It looks like VW wants us to believe we’re considering an eHybrid version of the current crossover, specifically an R-Line with its faux quad exhaust.

Ignore the misleading disguise and you should notice that the prototype looks bigger than the Tiguan we’re all familiar with. Also, the boxy shape is largely gone, replaced by a more curvy appearance akin to the purely electric ID.4. It’s too early to tell if VW will launch another Allspace derivative or build the vehicle in one size. This tester has the full production body, which tells us that the third generation model is getting closer.

Interior images aren’t available in this set, but a different prototype was captured by paparazzi in September featuring an ID-esque touchscreen. The infotainment is no longer neatly integrated into the center console like on the current model, but the silver lining is that it doesn’t protrude from the top of the dash like a sore thumb. It’s a compromise we’re fine with, provided we look at the final provision.

Despite the significant design changes planned inside and out, the 2024 Tiguan is expected to be more or less the same in terms of underpinnings. Volkswagen is putting all its eggs in the electric basket, which means that hardware development for combustion engine cars is slowing down. The new crossover is expected to use an evolution of the MQB platform as well as cleaner petrol and diesel engines to comply with upcoming Euro 7 regulations.

Logic tells us that mild-hybrid technology will be used across the range, and VW engineers have likely found a way to increase the plug-in hybrid model’s electric range. A purely electric Tiguan doesn’t make sense given that it would conflict with the ID.4 and a recently announced ID.3 derivative. A more powerful Tiguan bound for the US has been promised, but it’s unclear whether it will be the full-fledged R model.

The envelopes could fall in the second half of 2023.
