“Oppenheimer” and “The Bear” were among the big winners at the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday, an industry awards ceremony with only performance categories that often provides insight into potential Oscar results.

The ceremony, held at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles and broadcast live on Netflix for the first time, recognized the best film and television performances of 2023. Winners are chosen by members of the union, numbering more than 119,000, according to the SAG Awards website.

This year’s SAG Awards are the first since members went on strike for 118 days last year and finalized a contract with more than 350 production companies that promised higher wages, better working conditions and protections against the threat of artificial intelligence in performance.

The Life Achievement Award, announced before the ceremony, was given to Barbra Streisand. She received a standing ovation for her acceptance speech, in which she explained why she decided to pursue her dreams even though she was unlike other movie actresses of the time.

“This imaginary world was much more pleasant than anything I experienced. I didn’t like reality,” she said. “…It is truly a privilege to be a part of this profession. »
