We know Mercedes-Benz has a refresh in store for the GLE-Class. We’ve spotted plenty of prototypes in recent months, hiding minor changes under a camouflage coating on the front and rear fairings. This particular version is a muscular AMG GLE 63, and technically speaking, it’s our first look at the refreshed performance model.
That is to say that we think this is our first observation. The only areas of camouflage on this SUV are the front and rear lights. Ironically, this vehicle might be better hidden if it does not have have eye-catching camouflage, because the changes seem very slight. Unlike the standard GLE-Class, the AMG version has the same front fascia and grille design. The headlights are different – maybe a little thinner – but that’s all we can see. If so, new fenders and a fairing could be in the mix after all, to properly accommodate the new lights. But you would probably never notice the difference otherwise.
At the rear, it looks like the taillights will not change shape. On closer inspection, however, it looks like the reverse lights are now on the tailgate lenses instead of the wide rear fairing. A camouflage strip covers the distance between the lenses, suggesting that the chrome strip on the current model could change or disappear altogether. In any case, these are the only differences that we see on the outside. But wait, there is more.
In fact, there isn’t much more. Our spy photographer took some photos of the interior which at a glance look like the current GLE 63. Again, the devil is in the details as the steering wheel spokes are different, adopting the same styling seen on the current C-Class. Changes could also be made to the buttons on the center console, although the photos don’t clearly show everything in this area.
We doubt there are any changes to the powertrain, as the current GLE 63 is barely two years old. It debuted at the end of 2019 and went on sale the following year as a 2021 model. As such, while these changes are extremely minimal, we don’t expect an official announcement from Mercedes until late. of the year, debuting as a 2023 model.
