The 2023 BMW XM has officially started mass production. The electrified high-performance crossover will arrive in dealerships next spring, but assembly of the XM is currently taking place in Spartansburg, South Carolina.
“We are delighted to add the first-ever BMW XM to our factory portfolio,” said BMW Manufacturing President and CEO Dr. Robert Engelhorn. “The modern, forward-looking design and the powerful performance of the BMW XM have aroused great enthusiasm. As a competence center for the X models, the BMW plant in Spartanburg is ready to build this vehicle with the premium quality that our customers deserve.”

The XM debuted in September to much fanfare. It’s the first M-specific vehicle since the iconic BMW M1, but with 644 horsepower and a mass of more than three tons, it is not a successor of M1. It’s the heaviest production Bimmer ever offered, and it’s also the first to feature an electrified powertrain from BMW M. And then there’s the exterior design, which is as polarizing as it is unique. Whichever way you cut it, the XM stands out.
In case you missed the debut, the 2023 XM combines a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine generates 483 hp on its own, with the electric motor adding another 194 ponies. With everything synched we get the combined rating of 644bhp and that’s enough to send the XM to 60mph in 4.1 seconds. If that’s not enough for you, BMW will offer a 738bhp Label Red edition but it won’t arrive until autumn 2023.
The BMW plant in Spartanburg is also home to the production of BMW X5, X6 and X7 SUVs. It is a very active site, recording 257,876 total exports from the factory in 2021 alone. BMW doesn’t offer any estimated production numbers for the XM, but with a starting price of $159,995, it’s safe to assume volumes will be lower.
