BMW is set to unveil a concept showcasing the next generation of the 7 Series at the IAA in Munich in September, and we already have a basic idea of what the production model might look like. Today we can share a new batch of spy photos showing even more of the design of the company’s flagship sedan.
Spied near Munich, this prototype showcases the headlights and taillights of final production, and it looks like the luxury limousine will introduce a new design direction for the company. Sure, the camouflage could fool our eyes, but it looks like the headlights will be split into two sections with a set of narrower groups positioned lower in the bumper. This gives us some old 8 Series vibes, although it’s too early to give a definitive conclusion.

At the rear, nothing seems shocking but the design of the taillights will definitely change compared to the current model. This test car has a somewhat understated design for the rear bumper, although we suspect there will be at least a few different arrangements depending on trim level and appearance.
Our photographers have told us this is a regular combustion model, but we know that an all-electric variant with an identical exterior design is also in development. All models will be based on a brand new platform, which will be similar to the architecture of the iX.
We are sad to announce that the V12 engine will be phased out with the new generation model and that the most powerful new 7 Series is actually expected to be the battery powered version. Rumor has it that it has at least two electric motors, the i7 M60 (name not confirmed) could have around 660 horsepower in service.
Look for a next-gen Series 7 debut at some point next year with sales likely to start in late 2021 or early 2022.
