France and England will join Argentina and the Netherlands in the quarter-finals after the European powers made it easy for their opponents in Qatar on Sunday.
France kicked off on Sunday morning with another dominating display in a 3-1 win over Poland. Olivier Giroud kicked things off just before half-time, drilling a pass from Kylian Mbappé into the back of the net to become France’s all-time top scorer. Mbappé would add one of his own in the 74th minute and then cap it all off in the 91st minute with a curling strike into the corner – his fifth goal of the tournament. Poland’s Robert Lewandowski scored a consolation goal in the dying seconds of a penalty.
Late in the game, England made it look easy in their 3-0 win over Senegal. Jordan Henderson opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a fine finish on an assist from Jude Bellingham. Minutes later, Harry Kane scored his first goal of the tournament when he doubled the lead from the start of a breakaway thanks to brilliant play once again from Bellingham. In the second half, Bukayo Saka put the nail in the coffin with the game’s third goal to ensure England meet France in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
