The 2022 Presidents Cup continues this week in Charlotte, North Carolina, as the United States look to show off their might and claim their ninth consecutive trophy dating back to 2005. The Americans are looking to win their fifth Presidents Cup straight at home, while the International side are aiming for their first win since 1998 (or at least perhaps their first draw since 2003).
The United States is a heavy favorite to enter this year’s event at Quail Hollow Golf Club, and they got off to a strong start in the foursomes action on Day 1, taking a significant 4-1 lead. Not only is Team USA strong from top to bottom, but the International team is missing out on many of its best players due to some deciding to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf, rendering them ineligible.
Still, there is a lot of potential for the international team, which could pull off a monumental upset if all goes well. And that effort is set to begin on Friday in a four-ball game, a style in which the international team has largely followed the United States despite struggling in the foursomes recently.
Since the Presidents Cup actually has more matches than the Ryder Cup, this setup plays perfectly into the hands of Davis Love III’s 12-man squad. Nor has history been kind to the yellows and blacks. Although they have won and tied on international soil, the United States have a perfect seven-to-seven at home. Only one of those events was closer than a three-point margin, and that came back in 1996 when a team featuring Corey Pavin and Mark O’Meara outshot the international team, 16.5-15.5.
