The 2022 American Music Awards (AMA) went smoothly on Sunday.

Hosted by Wayne Brady, the 50th annual event saw a myriad of wins and performances across multiple musical genres. But since you already know how we do it around here, let’s get into the Blackity-black winners and special moments of the night.

Naturally, we must start by congratulating the winners. Chief among them is Beyoncewho won Favorite R&B Artist and Favorite R&B Album for Renaissance. Queen Bey was in place for six categories on Sunday night, so to see her only win two wait’s a bit surprising. DrankI honestly don’t expect a lot of AMAs, so I guess that’s par for the course.

Staying on the R&B front, Chris Brown was also named Favorite Male R&B Artist winner for his latest project, Costs. While not there to accept the award personally, the award presenter Kelly Rowland did it in his name. Dduring which, she took a moment to silence the crowd before praising Brown for his musical talents and contributions to the genre after his win was booed by the crowd.

“I want to say thank you to Chris for making great R&B music and I want to say thank you to him for being an amazing performer. I’m going to take this award and bring it to you, I love you. Congratulations,” Rowland said. .

Given Brown’s history of abuse and allegedly coloristic opinions and actions, Rowlands’ comments were later questioned by many people online.

VScontroversial comments aside, other winners of the evening included Kendrick Lamarwho won favorite male hip-hop artist and favorite hip-hop album for Mr. Morale and Big Steps; Future, for favorite hip-hop song for “Wait for U” feat. Time and Drake; Nicki Minaj for favorite hip-hop artist; Wizkid for Favorite Afrobeats Artist and Favorite R&B Song for “Essence” feat. Time; and Tamela Mann for Favorite Gospel Artist.

The night also saw performances hosted by the first candidate time Glorilla, who was joined by Cardi B. to perform their single “Tomorrow 2,” and Missy Elliot, who surprised the crowd when she joined Brazilian singer Anitta to perform their song, “Lobby.” Rapper Lil Baby performed a medley of his smash hits, including “California Breeze” and “In a Minute”. And men tribute to recently deceased country singer Loretta Lynn, singer Jimmie Allen also took the stage for a performance of one of her popular songs.

Additionally, the legendary Lionel Richie received one of the highest honors of the night, winning the prestigious Icon Award. His musical contributions were on full display in a fine performance that saw the likes of Allen, Stevie Wonder, Ari Lennox, Muni Long and Smokey Robinson come together for a surprise recreation of the 1986 AMA performance of “We Are The World.” , with Richie eventually joining in as well.
