2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible caught with the roof down

A little over a week ago, our spies grabbed a prototype of the new 4 Series Convertible with the roof up and now they have just spotted a different vehicle in the hands of a BMW test driver while enjoying driving. Even if the temperatures were well below 0 degrees Celsius, – 15 ° C or + 5 ° F to be exact – this did not prevent the driver from installing the fabric roof to make the most of the winter sun.

To protect themselves as much as possible from cold winds, the driver had the four windows raised as well as the wind deflector. Interestingly, BMW decided to block the view of the rear compartment by installing what looks like a parcel shelf that you see on cars that have a tailgate. Covering between the trunk and the rear seats was the folded flexible roof replacing the heavy and bulky metal roof of the previous 4 Series Convertible.

Switching to a fabric roof should result in a larger loading area as the folded roof will take up less space. It could also have a positive impact on the rear legroom, which is generally not so good in four-seat convertibles. Another positive aspect of the roof change will be the healthy eating made possible by the much lighter flexible roof.

BMW still snaps a lot of camouflage on its 4 series prototypes, although we already have a pretty good idea of how these more elegant two-series 3 series models will look like. Last year, the Bavarians introduced the Concept 4 with its highly controversial grille to preview the next iteration of the 4 Series. Although it was officially a concept, the overall design was probably quite close to what we will see on the production model later this year.

Nicknamed G23, the new 4 Series convertible would go into production in November and go on sale soon after. The official revelation is expected to take place after the coupe starts, so expect the envelopes to come off this fall.
