2021 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer spied on with production body and headlights

Another day another set of spy photos of the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. It almost seems like the Bavarian automaker is in a hurry to put the finishing touches on the next-gen van, as our spy photographers literally can’t stop catching prototypes of the AT 2s for testing. Today we have yet another batch of pictures taken on public roads in Germany.

The test car retains a significant amount of disguise, but will likely wear all production items eventually. As you can see, the front fairing now includes the final standard headlights with a dual projector lens configuration and stylish LED daytime running lights. It’s a similar story at the rear where there’s a pair of LED taillights covered in what appears to be bubble wrap.

In 2014, when the outgoing Active Tourer 2 Series debuted, it was touted as the first front-wheel drive BMW in history. Its successor will remain faithful to this layout as it will be based on the current 1 Series hatchback. Thanks to an updated architecture, the new model will be lighter and more efficient. More importantly, it will be able to accommodate electrified powertrains.

Speaking of powertrains, we cannot confirm the exact number and identity of engines that will be offered for the new 2 AT. However, we are 99% sure that a selection of three and four cylinder turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines will be available depending on the market. A plug-in hybrid derivative would also be in the cards for a later release during the model’s lifecycle.

Seeing how BMW is testing 2 AT prototypes with production parts, it’s probably safe to assume that the full van debut is imminent. Various sources are reporting a premiere in the first half of this year and with no Geneva show on the horizon, we would expect the debut to be fully online.
