A middle school student from Iowa died during a homecoming parade in Sloan on Friday, officials said.
According to Woodbury County Sheriff Chad Sheehan, Kage McDonald, a 12-year-old from Westwood Junior High School, fell from a float and was seriously injured. He was taken to MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center in Sioux City for life, where he was pronounced dead.
“Kage had a huge heart and I enjoyed every interaction I had with him,” Westwood Superintendent Jay Lutt said in a statement. “He was a tough boy who worked hard in everything he did. He will be missed and remembered by all who knew him.
A GoFundMe set up to raise funds for Kage’s family has already raised more than $ 27,000.
The school football game was postponed Friday night and played on Saturday and the school district has offered support, including councilors and clergy, to all students and staff.
An investigation into Kage’s death is underway.
