If the success of a sitcom could be measured by the caliber of celebrities who adorn its setting, Crazy of you would be a contender for the first place. With recurring spots owned by known names like Hank Azaria, Carol Burnett, Carroll O’Connor, Mel Brooks, Lisa Kudrow, and Cyndi Lauper, viewers of the series have grown accustomed to seeing very familiar faces on their TV screens.
Crazy of you Also features a guest star roster which reads like a Who’s Who in Hollywood roster and the show featured many famous stars in several memorable episodes over its 7 seasons.
ten Jerry Seinfeld
It makes sense that Jerry Seinfeld would make an appearance at some point as Crazy of you and Seinfeld share similarities. After all, Paul Buckman sublet his apartment in Kramer (yes, the one right across from Jerry the Seinfeld). This appearance is exceptional due to the strange circumstances in which Paul Buchman meets the famous actor.
In the Season 7 premiere, Paul took Viagra and, due to unexpected events, now has to scour the city looking for Jamie. The pill’s effectiveness is at its peak when he meets Jerry Seinfeld (playing himself) on the street. When Paul tells him he’s a huge fan, Jerry notices what’s going on in Paul’s pants and hastily escapes.
9 Yoko Ono
How to film the wind? This question is very much on Paul’s mind after Yoko Ono approached him to make a movie doing just that. In the season 4 episode “Yoko Said”, Paul is a mixture of excitement and sheer nervousness. It doesn’t help that Jamie accompanies her visit to Yoko’s apartment and feels compelled to touch all the fragile vases and sculptures within easy reach.
Part of what makes this appearance so enjoyable is that Yoko shows off her ability to laugh at herself. Although Paul has repeatedly warned Jamie not to mention the Beatles, Yoko lets it slip that everyone always says she broke the Beatles, much to Paul’s surprise. And ending the show with Paul, Jamie and Yoko sitting in bed while “Give Peace A Chance” plays in the background is just perfect.
8 Régis Philbin
When Burt Buchman yells: “Hello!” at Regis Philbin from the balcony of a crowded theater, he sets off a chain reaction of events that results in the photo of Paul’s naked baby appearing in the newspaper and a guest spot on the Regis TV show. In season one, “The Man Who Said Hello,” chaos ensues when Paul refuses to join his father on stage, so Ira pretends to be Burt’s son.
As you might expect, Regis is playing out perfectly. Going from brooding moments (especially when someone comes between him and the camera) to his signature charm, Regis Philbin made viewers feel like they were watching an authentic episode of his talk show.
7 Tim conway
With Carol Burnett holding a recurring role as Jamie’s mother, it makes sense to add her former co-star, Tim Conway, to the mix. An accomplished comedian, Conway is the master of the role of the slightly confused, bordering on clumsy employee, making his guest appearance in Season 7’s ideal “The Final Frontier”. When Lyle Lovett (again a other guest star) informs Jamie and Paul that they aren’t actually married, the couple panicking to get their marriage license.
Enter Tim Conway as the employee responsible for issuing marriage licenses. And the wedding officiant. And probably whatever other role he has to take on. After all, the Buchmans opted for the campaign to avoid the long lines of the Big Apple. Understandably, Conway’s perfect comedic timing, facial expressions, and physical humor steal the show.
6 Ellen degeneres
Long before Ellen DeGeneres became a household name, she made an appearance in the finale of Crazy about Youis the sixth season. Playing the role of an overly wordy, accident-prone caterer for Paul’s production team, viewers are treated to a first glimpse of this expert comedian at work. When Paul unwittingly fires her, he ends up hiring her to be Mabel’s nanny.
This guest appearance is memorable (although it is reported that DeGeneres doesn’t remember being on the show) as it’s more like watching her act on her feet. She talks transparently about whatever comes to her mind, leaving the audience wondering how someone can string together so many sentences without catching their breath.
5 Bruce willis
In “The Birth” of season 5, Bruce Willis has just been injured during the filming Already dead. With the hospital filled with paparazzi and worried fans, Paul is forced to navigate the bowels of the building to reach Jamie who is hard at work. Paul meets Willis, dressed in a hospital gown and bandaged over his head, in the men’s restroom and the two engage in a side-by-side conversation with the urinal.
Willis then leads Paul through a maze of conduits, which reminds fans of the action scenes from Die hard, leading him to Jamie. A regular at comedy himself, Willis delivers his lines with expert comedic timing and exceptional facial expressions. He and Reiser are wonderful together. And the portrayal of Willis with a possibly serious head injury is brilliant.
4 Jerry lewis
It’s quite a feather in the proverbial Paul Reiser cap to have secured Jerry Lewis in the season 1 episode “The Billionaire”. In this iconic episode, Lewis appears as the little-known billionaire, Freddie Statler. Carrying massive trays containing sesame bagels and all the fixings, he informs Paul that he wants him to make a movie, “For me, with me and about me” because the statues take too long.
While Jerry Lewis’s manic portrayal of a man used to getting things done is great, part of what makes this appearance special is the reactions of the people around him. In particular, her scene with the unperturbed and extremely impassive Stephen Wright is comedic gold.
3 Steve buscemi
One of the series’ most unforgettable guest concerts is Steve Buscemi’s appearance in season one “Token Friend”. Buscemi appears as Howie, a former classmate in film school, who has a bitter grudge against Paul. At the time, Paul disconnected the last editing machine, rendering Howie unable to submit a project on time, which he said led to his downward trajectory, culminating in his current career at the subway tollbooth.
When Paul finds out that Howie is working on the subway, he tries in vain to avoid this convenient mode of transportation. Of course, her efforts fail, in large part thanks to Jamie. Buscemi’s performance as a bitter, staged victim is flawless (brimming with contempt) and Paul’s subsequent unease is palpable. And hilarious.
2 Nathan Way
When you imagine the greatest lover in the world, able to bring a woman to the height of pleasure with just a look, Nathan Lane might not be the first person that comes to mind. In Season 6’s “Good Old Reliable Nathan”, we learn that as Jamie’s “first” he could do just that. When Nathan learns that Paul is aware that he has “defiled” his wife, he becomes convinced that Paul is trying to kill him.
In a series of unfortunate events, Paul hits Nathan in the head with doors, shoots him with a nail gun, throws him hand first into a pair of ice cube trays, and waves a bread knife in his direction. . Nathan Lane is transformed into a creepy, almost whiny wreck, showcasing his stellar Thespian skills and knack for physical humor. And the results are comedic perfection, reminding fans of Nathan Lane’s comedic talent in his best roles.
1 Carl Reiner
In Season 3’s “The Alan Brady Show”, Paul finished filming a television story and set his sights on Alan Brady (the role of Carl Reiner in The Dick Van Dyke Show) to be the narrator. There is a glitch: Brady is unhappy that only 6 minutes of the film are devoted to him. Hilarity ensues as viewers watch Brady expertly use bullying, name calling, and outright bullying to try and get what he wants. Jamie even falls into a striking impression of Mary Tyler Moore as Van Dyke’s wife.
While the top-notch portrayal of Carl Reiner is enough to secure the top spot on this list, the added twist of having a fictional character himself makes this guest appearance very special. And watching Paul outsmart Alan Brady in order to get his own way leaves audiences completely satisfied.
