A joke on The death of Steve Irwin rubs some viewers the wrong way.
During the “Weekend Update” segment on “Saturday Night Live”, hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che discussed the continued spread of the coronavirus. But Che chose not to shed light on the deadly virus.
“I don’t want to make jokes about this coronavirus and not because it’s too sad,” said Che. “It’s because I don’t know yet that I don’t have it, and if I do, the Internet will play this clip of me making fun over and over.”
Instead, Che made fun of Irwin’s death: “Imagine if there was a video of the Crocodile Hunter laughing at sting rays.”
Irwin, the wildlife expert who reportedly celebrated his 58th birthday last week, died after a racket attacked him while working on the underwater film “Ocean’s Deadliest” in Australia in 2006.

“I mean, what if this is it?” Che said while slightly breaking the character. “This is not how I want to be remembered.” The audience let out a collective moan as a result of the joke and some viewers at home went on Twitter to express their disapproval. “This Steve Irwin” joke “was just … so bad,” @katiel_carter tweeted.
